CEXEC, Inc. recently completed the design, pilot installation and implementation, and security accreditation of an enterprise WLAN solution for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The NRC’s unique mission creates high demands for a reliable and secure wireless network. CEXEC considers it a testament to its network engineering expertise to have been chosen to support this project. Not only has CEXEC successfully put the NRC’s wireless pilot network into operation, it has met the strictest security and accreditation requirements mandated by Federal policymakers such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The NRC remains the only agency to date to have received an “A” grade on its Federal Information Security Report Card.

The NRC WLAN solution is reliable and standards-compliant and satisfies all government security requirements. The solution is based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11g wireless standard, which allows for up to 54 Mbps of bandwidth. CEXEC developed a “defense-in-depth” secure WLAN solution that included a Federal Information Security Management Act ( FISMA ) compliant and Federal Information Processing Standards ( FIPS ) 140-2 certified encryption solution. The security accreditation, which was based on NIST and FISMA guidance, included a response to all NIST security controls and completion of a risk assessment that was based on published NIST methodology. CEXEC implemented industry best practices for wireless security and reviewed other Federal Government agency policies, including the recent DoD 8100.2 directive for the use of commercially available wireless devices in the DoD environment.
